TURN Gallery is pleased to present Mary Corman’s PILGRIMAGE opening Wednesday October 26th, 2022. This exhibition is Corman's solo debut at the gallery.

Corman’s paintings are filled with residues of the past. She depicts spaces marked by the histories of those who have visited before, witnessing the same formal elements, the same quiet emptiness. Her process is slow and steady. Her linen canvas is so refined and smooth that the oil paint seems to float above it until the canvas nearly disappears, allowing for layers of subtle gradations of light and a sense of transparency, a ghostly impression of the passage of time.

The invisible histories contained within her paintings evoke both a sense of mystery and familiarity. Corman captures the gravity, comfort and discipline of her silent spaces. "I make pilgrimages to empty spaces and photograph them tirelessly, then sit with the images until something resonates. My watercolor sketches are inspired by the photographs that feel right to me, and those sketches become paintings.”

In this new body of work, Corman continues her search for the liminal. While her palette is restricted to that of the natural world, her work transcends the material. Painting in translucent layers, Corman focuses on luminosity and saturation. Her careful depiction of light and color is grounded by the boldness of the architectural compositions– the works embody both delicacy and strength.

Mary Corman received her MFA from New York University, Steinhardt School and BA from Stanford University. Recent exhibitions include a two person exhibition with Melissa Joseph at TURN Gallery (2021). Group exhibitions include 80WSE Gallery, Black Ball Projects, Studio 200. She participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Columbia University, is a recipient of the Louis Sudler Grant, and was nominated for a fellowship from the Daedalus Foundation. She teaches painting at NYU and lives and works in New York City.
